Gordon & Macphail Discovery Ledaig Smoky 12 Year Old - Sales end
This 12-year-old whisky comes from the Tobermory distillery, where Ledaig is produced as a peated whisky with an island character. Independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail has included it in the Discovery series, which clearly showcases three key whisky styles: Sherry, Bourbon, and Smoky.
Ledaig represents the Smoky Style, a pronounced combination of peat, smoke, minerality, and saltiness.
The whisky matured for approximately 12 years, primarily in ex-bourbon casks, which enhanced the sweet malty base and the island's smoky layer. It is bottled at 43% ABV, providing a harmonious balance between smoke, fruitiness, and gentle sweetness.
The nose reveals typical notes of campfire smoke, sea salt, toasted barley, lemon peel, earthiness, and green apple. Sweet vanilla and a light mineral note gradually emerge.
The palate is bold and characteristically island-like – sweet smoke, ash, earthy peat, lemon, white pepper, honeyed barley, and a delicate touch of vanilla. The texture is medium-full, pleasantly oily, with a beautiful balance between salty, sweet, and smoky profiles.
The finish is long and warming, bringing notes of smoky malt, sea salt, lemon peel, spice, and lingering peat.
This expression is ideal for peat whisky lovers seeking something different from classic Islay – the island character of Ledaig offers a mineral, salty, and smoky-sweet balance.
