Sekt is a sparkling wine that originates from German-speaking countries – Germany and Austria. The name has been used since the 18th century and has gradually become a term for a wide range of sparkling wines produced using the traditional method (secondary fermentation in the bottle) or the Charmat method (fermentation in large tanks).

Sekt in Slovakia

Sekt has a long tradition in Central Europe, and a significant part of the production consists of Slovak sekts. These are made from varieties grown in the Small Carpathian region or southern Slovakia and match the quality of Austrian and German counterparts.

Styles and Taste

Sekt can vary according to the grape variety, sugar content, and production method:

Brut Nature / Extra Brut – very dry sekts, with pronounced freshness.
Brut and Extra Dry – the most popular, suitable as an aperitif.
Demi-Sec and sweeter styles – sekts with a gentle fruity sweetness, ideal for desserts.

The Difference Between Sekt and Champagne

Although sekt is often compared to champagne, the designation Champagne can only be used for wines from the French Champagne region. Thus, sekt is a separate category of sparkling wines, which also includes cava and prosecco.

How to Enjoy Sekt

It is served well chilled (6–8 °C) in a flute glass. It is perfect for celebrations, as well as with light appetizers, salads, or desserts.
