Laphroaig

Laphroaig (pronounced "La-FROYg") is a distillery whose malts are distinctly individual and completely characteristic. The distillery was founded in 1810 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. It was originally a family farm in a small bay on the southernmost tip of Islay. The unique taste of Laphroaig whiskey comes from its coastal surroundings and high content of moss, which is processed in a distillery on a separate floor of the malthouse.

Until 1954, Laphroaig was owned by members of the Johnston family. In 1847, co-founder Donald Johnston died under dramatic circumstances - after falling into a brewery - and the following decade was run by Laphroaig Walter Graham, director of the neighboring Lagavulin distillery. Laphroaig returned to the Johnston family in 1857 when Donald's son, Dugald, acquired the property.

Laphroaig is currently operated by the American company Fortune Brands Inc. and since 2002 has always been the best-selling Islay single malt whiskey in the world. During these 10 years, sales increased by 50%.
