Laphroaig PX Cask
PX Cask was the first to enjoy maturing in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels, often referred to as “PX barrels. Pedro Ximenez sherry is known for its natural sweetness, derived from dried Pedro Ximenez grapes.
All three types of barrels, from American oak to the so-called quarter cask to Pedro Ximenez sherry, which are used for maturing, give this sherry some of its properties. The final maturation in PX Cask barrels adds a rich, sweeter scent with a full body, which perfectly complements the sharp scent of peat smoke from Laphroaig, creating a product that we must appreciate over time so that we can fully discover it.
Appearance: Antique gold.
Aroma: From the bottle you will feel a pleasant sherry aroma of sweet sultanas and raisins with a hint of licorice and only a slightly sharp smell of peat. A drop of water brings a marzipan and almond aroma, and on the other hand there is a creamy scent of nuts and a lot of ripe fruit, but again the sharp, albeit subtle, scent of peat smoke.
Body: Intense depth.
Taste: Without the addition of water, the mouth is flooded with a massive explosion of peat with a huge amount of oak flavor, muffled only by the sweeter heavy sherry flavor. The addition of a drop of water gently silences the powerful smell of peat, which disappears very slowly, thus allowing the sweeter flavors of sherry to penetrate, although the burst of peat smoke that dries the mouth is always present.
Conclusion: Concentrated peat and oak with a significant effect of sherry and intense dryness.
