Sherry

Sherry is a fortified wine originating from southern Spain, specifically from the Andalusia region. It is made primarily from the white Palomino grape variety, and its unique flavour comes from the special ageing process known as the Solera system. This technique gives Sherry its complexity, smoothness, and unmistakable character.

Styles of Sherry

Sherry is not just one type of wine. There are several styles that differ in colour, taste, and sweetness:

Fino – dry, light, and fresh, ideal as an aperitif.
Manzanilla – very delicate Sherry with a hint of saltiness, typical of coastal towns.
Amontillado – combines the freshness of Fino with richer, nutty notes.
Oloroso – fuller-bodied, darker, with a more pronounced aroma.
Pedro Ximénez (PX) – sweet Sherry made from sun-dried grapes, with flavours of raisins, figs, and caramel.

How to Enjoy Sherry

Sherry is traditionally served in a special tulip-shaped copita glass. Dry styles (Fino, Manzanilla) are perfect as an aperitif, while sweeter versions (PX, Cream Sherry) are enjoyed as a digestif or paired with desserts. In gastronomy, Sherry is also used in cooking – it enhances sauces, soups, and desserts.
