Sloe gin is a unique fruit gin made by macerating sloe berries (blackthorn fruit) in gin. The result is a rich, slightly sweet and tangy spirit that combines the freshness of gin with the fruity depth of a liqueur. It’s one of the most intriguing gin variations – perfect for colder days yet equally popular as an elegant after-dinner digestif.

Traditional origin and production

Sloe gin originated in 18th-century Britain, where sloes were typically picked after the first frost and used to flavour homemade gins. This softened the sharp alcohol and added a fruity character. Modern production keeps the same principle – a long maceration of sloes in gin (often for several months), allowing the spirit to absorb the natural colour, aroma, and flavour of the fruit.

Taste and serving

Sloe gin has a lower alcohol content than standard gins, usually around 25–30%, making it lighter and more approachable. Its taste is fruity and gently tart, with notes of almond, vanilla, and spice.
