Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old matures in sherry casks (primarily Oloroso), which give it a distinctive, warming, and elegant profile. Unlike most Islay whiskies, which are heavily peated, this version is almost smoke-free, highlighting the purity and delicate sweetness of its character.
Distillation takes place in the traditional way right on the coast of Islay, where the salty sea air and humid climate play an important role in the slow maturation of the whisky.
The aroma of whisky is complex and warming – dominated by sherry, caramel, dried fruits, nuts, dark chocolate and a hint of sea salt. In the background, vanilla, honey, and a subtle oak aroma emerge.
The taste is full, rich, and beautifully balanced. Notes of dark chocolate, dried plums, caramel, nuts, raisins, and gentle spices come together in a harmonious whole. There is also a distinct sea salt and a trace of tobacco, which add a deep Islay signature.
