A whisky created for Slovakia: The GlenAllachie Single Cask 2013
The GlenAllachie is one of the most prominent names in modern Scotch single malt whisky, and master blender Billy Walker deserves much of the credit. In this article, we take a closer look at the limited The GlenAllachie Single Cask 2013 Selected by Billy Walker for Slovakia – a 13-year-old whisky matured in a Pedro Ximénez cask and created exclusively for the Slovak market.
History of The GlenAllachie distillery
The The GlenAllachie distillery is located in Scotland's Speyside region and was founded in 1967 for Mackinlay–McPherson. It was originally used primarily to produce spirit for blended Scotch whisky. Over time, the distillery came under the management of Chivas Brothers, which sold it in 2017 to master blender Billy Walker and his partners.
In 2018, the distillery released its first permanent core range. The range includes several age-statement bottlings, such as 8, 12, 15 and 18-year-old whisky, while a 21-year-old cask-strength whisky is also released annually in batches. For 2026, this is The GlenAllachie 21 Year Old Batch 7.

Who is Billy Walker?
Billy Walker is one of the most prominent figures in the modern Scotch whisky world. He has worked in the whisky industry since 1972 and during his more than five-decade career has been involved with numerous important brands and distilleries. He made his name primarily through the revival of BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh and is particularly known for his instinct for cask selection and experimentation with different types of wood.
His work has earned him numerous awards, including induction into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame, and has contributed significantly to The GlenAllachie's rise to become one of the respected names in Scotch single malt whisky.
Billy Walker and cask experimentation
Billy Walker is known for experimenting with different types of casks in which his spirit matures. This has resulted in a number of limited editions and cask finishes, ranging from Port and sherry to dry wine and virgin oak from a variety of origins.
The distillery is currently releasing a series called Sinteis, meaning Synthesis, in which Billy Walker skilfully combines two whiskies matured in two different types of cask. One is a sherry cask and the other is virgin oak. The 4th bottle in the series has now been released, combining maturation in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks with maturation in Mongolian virgin oak casks.

Single Cask bottlings from The GlenAllachie
Alongside these bottlings, The GlenAllachie also releases Single Cask editions. These are whiskies that come from one specific cask and are bottled at cask strength, without added colouring or chill filtration. Most of these bottlings are released as an exclusive edition for a particular market, country or distributor. Today, we are taking a closer look at one such bottling.
The GlenAllachie Single Cask 2013 Selected by Billy Walker for Slovakia
This is a 13-year-old The GlenAllachie Single Cask 2013 Selected by Billy Walker for Slovakia, created through a collaboration between Svet Nápojov and Billy Walker. The whisky matured for 13 years in Pedro Ximénez cask number 6579. The cask produced just 343 bottles, bottled at a cask strength of 61.5% ABV, without added colouring or chill filtration.
Nose
The whisky is already beautifully rich and juicy on the nose. It offers notes of dried fruit, raisins, honey, cinnamon, citrus, coffee, cocoa, nuts, caramelised sugar, black pepper and ginger.
Palate
The palate is intense and full-bodied. Dominant notes include black pepper, ginger, bitter coffee, dried fruit, orange peel and cinnamon. You can also find caramel and molasses, cocoa and dark chocolate, honey, nuts and a subtle floral note that becomes more prominent after adding a little water.
With a few drops of water, the whisky opens up, revealing more of its floral character and fruitier notes such as raisins, oranges and dates, together with a subtle earthy note. Thanks to its high alcohol content, the whisky has a beautifully creamy and oily texture, which it retains even after dilution.
Finish
The finish is long, warming and pronounced. Notes of citrus, dried fruit, baking spices, coffee, molasses, flowers, nuts, honey, raisins and bitter cocoa continue to linger.

Review of The GlenAllachie Single Cask 2013
This is a genuinely beautiful whisky and, in my view, a typical representative of a distillery known for its heavier, sherry-matured whiskies. The GlenAllachie spirit, which is naturally more ester-driven thanks to the longer fermentation times used at the distillery, works extremely well with the intensity of the sweet sherry from the casks in which it matured.
For me, this is a truly opulent whisky that represents everything I look for in whisky. It is viscous, rich, fruity and packed with flavour. I particularly enjoyed gradually diluting it from its original strength down to around 43% ABV and observing how its character changed and which flavours came to the forefront at a lower alcohol strength.
The only thing I could really “criticise” is that this whisky may be less approachable for people who are new to whisky, or for those who prefer gentler whiskies with a lower alcohol content. It would probably not be the first bottle I would choose as an introduction to whisky for a beginner, but if you are an experienced whisky drinker or enjoy experimenting, this is definitely a whisky worth trying.
It also makes a great and unique gift: something created for a specific market, with individually numbered and strictly limited bottles. Just like the previous Single Cask from 2022, once it sells out, there will be no more. This gives you a great opportunity to add to, expand or even start your collection, or to give someone close to you a special gift.
I hope this whisky has impressed you as much as it impressed me and that you decide to give it a try.
See you in the next article. Slàinte.
