Cruach Mhóna means a pile of drying peat cubes in Gaelic and is a continuation of Toiteach (in Gaelic "smoke") as a Bunnahabhain peat drink. Although Islay is known for its peat, the whisky brands Bunnahabhain are not normally produced using it (the exception that proves the rule).
The whisky is matured in oak casks.
The aroma of Cruach Mhóna features intense peat smoke and wood charcoal, complemented by sea salt, notes of fresh hay, sweet malt and delicate vanilla tones. The mineral and sea air are also vibrant, with hints of citrus (especially lemon peel) bringing freshness to the drier profile.
The taste is explosive – a distinctive introduction with smoke, fiery peat, the saltiness of the sea and a spicy pinch of black pepper. Underneath, there is a sweetness – dried fruit, sweet malt and oak. It is a distinctive whisky, but still well balanced thanks to the sweet and fruity elements that soften the raw smoke. The finish is medium-long, with lingering smoke, spice, hints of citrus freshness and sea salt.
We recommend serving it neat, at room temperature, in a suitable glass (e.g. Glencairn) to fully reveal the layers – smoke, spices, fruit. A few drops of water can help release the fruitier and sweeter elements. A great choice for winter evenings, or if you fancy something a little ‘spicier’ in the Islay single malt whisky range.
