Cruach Mhóna means in Gaelic a pile of drying peat blocks and is a continuation of Toiteach (Gaelic for "smoky") as a peat drink from the Bunnahabhain. Although Islay is known for peat, whisky from Bunnahabhain is not commonly made with it (the exception that proves the rule).
The whisky matures in oak casks.
The aroma of Cruach Mhóna features intense peat smoke and woody charcoal, complemented by sea salt, notes of fresh hay, sweet malt, and subtle vanilla tones. The complete vibrancy also includes mineral and sea air, hints of citrus (especially lemon peel) bringing freshness to the drier profile.
The taste is explosive – a bold introduction with smoke, smoldering peat, sea salt, and a spicy pinch of black pepper. Beneath the surface, sweetness resonates – dried fruit, sweet malt, and oak. It is a bold whisky, yet still well-balanced thanks to the sweet and fruity elements that temper the raw smoke. The finish is medium-long, with lingering smoke, spice, touches of citrus freshness, and sea salt.
We recommend serving it best neat, at room temperature, in a suitable glass (e.g., Glencairn), to fully reveal the layers - smoke, spices, fruit. A few drops of water can help release the fruity and sweeter elements. A great choice for winter evenings, or if you're in the mood for something "sharper" within Islay single malt whisky.
