Gordon & Macphail Discovery Ledaig Smoky 12 Year Old
This 12-year-old whisky comes from the Tobermory distillery, where the name Ledaig is used for their peated, island-style whisky. Independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail included it in the Discovery range, created to clearly showcase three fundamental whisky styles: Sherry, Bourbon and Smoky.
Here, Ledaig represents the Smoky Style, offering a bold combination of peat, smoke, minerality and coastal salinity.
The whisky matured for approximately 12 years, primarily in ex-bourbon casks, which enhanced its sweet malty foundation and layered island smoke. Bottled at 43 % ABV, it provides a balanced profile of smoke, fruitiness and gentle sweetness.
On the nose, it reveals classic notes of campfire smoke, sea salt, roasted barley, lemon peel, earthiness and green apple. Gradually, sweet vanilla and a light mineral accent appear.
The palate is bold and distinctly island-like – sweet smoke, ash, earthy peat, lemon, white pepper, honeyed barley and a touch of vanilla. The texture is medium-bodied, pleasantly oily, offering an excellent balance between salty, sweet and smoky elements.
The finish is long and warming, with tones of smoky malt, sea salt, lemon peel, spice and lingering peat smoke.
This expression is perfect for fans of peated whisky who seek something different from the classic Islay style – the island character of Ledaig adds mineral, salty and sweet-smoky harmony.
