Edradour 10 Year Old
Pronunciation: {Edradór}Edradour 10 Year Old is a basic yet very distinctive single malt from the Edradour distillery in the Scottish Highlands (Pitlochry). Its production is still manual, and the distillery uses traditional methods that have essentially remained unchanged for decades.
This whisky is known for its strong influence of sherry casks and robust character that isn't afraid to show its personality.
Edradour is a small farm distillery that maintains manual production and technologies from the past, including small stills and traditional equipment. Distillation is done in the classic way from barley, likely using worm tub condensers, which contributes to a fuller, textured distillate (typically found in small Highland distilleries).
The whisky ages in 100% Oloroso sherry casks, but reviews also mention combinations of sherry and bourbon casks (cask blend). The alcohol content is 40% ABV (in the standard version).
On the nose, Edradour 10 opens with rich notes of dried fruits, sherry, almonds, vanilla, and syrup. Notes of candied fruits, nuts and subtle spices (cinnamon, clove) emerge.
On the palate, the whisky is full, rich, sweet, with a sherry-influenced structure - notes of currants, figs, dates, almond accents, caramel, and honey appear. In the background, notes of rye or dark bread, barley, and a hint of spice (black pepper, a pinch of nutmeg) may emerge.
The finish is medium-long, warm, with lingering sweetness and a gentle spicy undertone, possibly a touch of oak.
It is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, possibly with a small amount of water to open up the finer notes of fruit and spice. Due to its strong profile, it is more suitable for slow sipping.
