Planteray Oceana Single Vintage Mauritius 2014 is a limited edition vintage rum that represents the character of the island of Mauritius and the typical approach of the Planteray brand to double aging.
The rum was distilled in 2014 from molasses in a column still. The first 8 years it aged in the tropical climate of Mauritius in bourbon casks, where it developed distinct fruity, vanilla, and caramel notes. It then traveled to France, where it continued to age for another 4 years in Ferrand casks in a milder continental climate. The total aging time thus reaches 12 years.
Double aging is one of the characteristic processes of Planteray – the rum first matures in its country of origin and then continues in ex-Ferrand casks in France. The goal is to preserve the character of the terroir while adding further structure and smoothness.
The aroma opens with a rich combination of caramel, vanilla, and tropical fruit. Passion fruit, ripe banana, and coconut are complemented by lemon zest, nutmeg, and fine sweet tobacco. The taste continues with dried fruit and exotic guava with a delicate floral hint of rose petals.
The finish gradually dries out, bringing black tea, freshly ground spices, and candied orange peel. Bottled at 50% alcohol, it preserves the intensity and distinct character of the individual layers.
Oceana is part of the limited vintage editions of Planteray, aimed at showcasing the diversity of rum terroirs and production methods around the world.
