The Balvenie 16 Year Old French Oak is an elegant single malt whisky from Speyside, Scotland, that combines traditional craftsmanship with an innovative approach to maturation.
This whisky was first aged for 16 years in American oak casks, which imparted classic notes of honey and vanilla. It was then finished in casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes, a fortified wine from the Charentes region of France, created by blending fresh grape juice with young cognac and then aging. This innovative approach brings new layers of flavors and aromas to the whisky.
The nose features delicate floral notes of lotus and nutmeg, complemented by hints of fresh meadow grass and green apple skin. On the palate, there is an energizing combination of lemon zest and grapefruit, accompanied by the sweetness of glazed fruits and spice from ginger root. The finish is refreshing and medium-length, with lingering notes of citrus and honeydew melon.
Balvenie is known for its emphasis on traditional whisky-making methods, as well as a constant commitment to innovation. The use of Pineau des Charentes casks is the first such experiment in the distillery's 130-year history. This edition is part of the Cask Finishes series, which Balvenie has been developing since 1983 under the guidance of malt master David C. Stewart MBE.
