The Balvenie is a Scottish distillery that has specialised in producing single malt whisky for over a century. It is located in the Convals area of Dufftown, widely regarded as the heart of the Speyside region. The distillery was built by William Grant in 1892, just below the now world-famous Glenfiddich distillery. Both distilleries used the same water source, the Robbie Dhu springs, and had the same distiller. However, Balvenie created a very different style and a unique character of its own.

Whisky made the traditional way

Balvenie is one of the few Scottish distilleries that has retained its own maltings to this day. Barley is malted on site, using hand-cut peat. This traditional approach gives Balvenie whisky its gentle complexity and unmistakable character. Interestingly, the Balvenie maltings also supply the neighbouring Glenfiddich distillery.

A family-owned brand known worldwide

Since its foundation, Balvenie has remained part of the family-owned company William Grant & Sons, which also owns other well-known distilleries in the Speyside region, including Glenfiddich and Kininvie. In recent years, Balvenie has ranked among the best-selling single malt whiskies, with demand continuing to grow.

Balvenie whiskies we recommend tasting

If we were to recommend two well-known Balvenie whiskies, they would certainly be Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old. It is popular for its balanced and smooth flavour, offering notes of honey, vanilla, and dried fruit. The second is Balvenie Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old, which stands out thanks to its maturation in Caribbean rum casks, giving it a gently sweet and exotic character.

The many international awards Balvenie has won show that the brand is not just about history. It is mainly about quality and consistent flavour. It is a whisky that appeals to connoisseurs while remaining approachable for those just beginning their journey into the world of single malt whisky.
