Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old
Pronunciation: {Glen-morendží}Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14 Year Old is the current version from the “Extra Matured” range by Glenmorangie distillery (Highlands). It features a combination of initial aging in bourbon and subsequent maturation in ex-port wine casks from Portugal (ruby port casks), which gives it a darker, layered, and more pronounced character compared to the base edition.
Glenmorangie uses tall copper stills (known as giraffe-stills) with long necks that allow only lighter and cleaner vapors to pass through – resulting in a smoother distillate.
Whisky first ages for about 10 years in bourbon casks (American white oak). It is then transferred to ex-port wine casks (“ruby port pipes”) imported from Portugal (Quinta / wine regions), where it matures for additional years to gain color and character from the port influence. Alcohol: 46% ABV.
The aroma reveals darker fruit notes (cherries, blackcurrants) combined with chocolate, mandarin, nuts, and subtle spices. Accents of mint chocolate, orange peel, and walnuts are added.
The taste showcases smoothness, rich layers of chocolate, orange, nuts (almonds / walnuts), a hint of spice, and dark fruit (cherries, currants). The development leads to a combination of sweet and dry notes with a touch of citrus freshness. The finish is relatively long, with the presence of dark chocolate, orange, and gentle spices, as well as hints of nuts and oak.
It is best enjoyed neat or with just a drop of water to release the delicate notes of port fruitiness. Due to its intensity, it is suitable as a whisky for slow sipping after a meal. It pairs excellently with dark chocolate, orange desserts (e.g., chocolate orange cake), nut pralines, or desserts based on cherries or red fruits.
