The Glenmorangie Distillery was established in 1843 in Durno Firth by brothers William and John Mathesen. At this place was originally a farm distillery called Morangie. There is evidence that distillation was carried out here at the beginning of the 18th century. Production began in November 1849. During the second half of the 19th century, Glenmorangie began exporting overseas, and its destinations included Europe and the United States.

Dependence on foreign trade was so strong that the distillery closed in 1931 after the enactment of prohibition in the USA and the Great Depression. It remained closed until November 1936. MacDonald and Muir Ltd, who bought the company in the early 19th century, put Glenmorangie Plc on sale. Glenmorangie Plc included Ardbeg, Glen Moray and Glenmorangie distilleries, and after feverish bidding, the group was bought by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey for $ 300 million.

To some extent, Glenmorangie were pioneers in the area of wooden closures. Pleasing examples are Nectar D'Or with the conclusion of Sauternes and Côte De Beauneso with the conclusion of twelve. In 2008, a rather unusual product, Glenmorangie's Signet, was launched. Signet is a single-type whiskey distilled from chocolate malt and has a charming taste.
