Kilchoman Machir Bay is an excellent and, above all, high-quality Scottish single malt whisky from the Islay region. The Kilchoman distillery was opened in 2005 and is (so far) the second youngest distillery in the region. This bottling was named Machir Bay after a small but very beautiful beach on the island of Islay.
The whisky has been aged for approximately 6 years, with most of the distillate aged in first- and second-fill ex-bourbon casks, while a portion (approximately 10 %) of the distillate has been aged in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry casks, resulting in a wonderfully balanced flavor profile.
It has a fantastically pleasant aroma with notes of vanilla biscuits, orchard fruit, and warm peat smoke. On the palate, this whisky is silky smooth and rounded, with notes of earthy peat, lemon juice, oak, vanilla, and a hint of tart forest fruit.
It was bottled at 46 % alcohol strength, without coloring or chill filtration.
We recommend serving it with a drop of water, but it tastes best neat at room temperature. It comes in a very nice blue and gold gift box.
Sanaig whisky from the Kilchoman distillery is named after a bay on the rugged Atlantic coast of Islay.
Approximately 70 % of the distillate matured in first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry casks and approximately 30 % matured in first- and second-fill ex-bourbon casks.
The high proportion of Oloroso sherry gives the whisky a taste of dried fruit, raisins and baking spices, while the ex-bourbon component retains the distillery's typical citrus and peaty profile.
The result is a balanced single malt whisky with a complex aroma, smooth taste and a medium-long, slightly spicy and smoky finish that perfectly represents the style and character of the Kilchoman distillery.
