Old Fashioned – a cocktail that has survived two centuries

The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest mixed drinks in the world and a symbol of elegance, minimalism, and timeless taste. In an era of complicated cocktails with lots of ingredients, it represents a return to basics:  high-quality whisky, sugar, bitters, and water. Nothing else. And yet it's perfect.

How did the Old Fashioned come about?

1. Origin of the word "cocktail"

In 1806, The Balance and Columbian Repository newspaper defined a cocktail as:

"Strong whiskey, sugar, water, and bitters."

And that's exactly what Old Fashioned is. It's basically the original form of the cocktail – before liqueurs, vermouths and exotic ingredients were added.

2. Why is it called "Old Fashioned"?

At the end of the 19th century, bartenders began experimenting with recipes and creating increasingly complex drinks. However, some customers did not like this and asked for cocktails "the old-fashioned way" – that is, in the original style.

And so the name Old-Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail was born, which was gradually shortened to Old Fashioned.

3. Pendennis Club and popularity

Legend has it that the modern version of the drink was popularized in the 1880s by the Pendennis Club, a private club in Louisville, Kentucky. From there, the drink spread throughout America.

Period of decline and renaissance

During the 20th century, the Old Fashioned underwent various modifications – fruit salads, soda, and even cherry syrup were added. In some bars, it became a sweet, over-decorated drink.

The real return to the classics came during the cocktail renaissance after 2000. The TV series Mad Men, in which the main character Don Draper regularly orders Old Fashioned cocktails, also played a large part in its popularity.

Today, it is one of the best-selling cocktails in the world.

Interesting facts about Old Fashioned

  • Originally, it was prepared exclusively from rye whiskey, not bourbon.

  • A large ice cube is not just for aesthetics - it melts slowly and controls dilution.

  • Orange peel is not just for decoration - its essential oils have a significant impact on flavor.

  • In the past, sugar was crushed directly in a glass, but today sugar syrup is often used.

  • There are hundreds of variations - with rum, tequila, mezcal, or even gin.

Detailed recipe for a classic Old Fashioned

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml of quality whiskey (bourbon or rye)

  • 1 sugar cube (or 10 ml sugar syrup 1:1)

  • 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 1 teaspoon of water (if using a sugar cube)

  • large ice cube

  • orange peel

  • (optional) cocktail cherry

Procedure – traditional method with sugar cubes

  1. Place a sugar cube in a lowball glass (old fashioned glass).

  2. Add bitters and a few drops of water.

  3. Use a muddler to crush and dissolve the sugar.

  4. Add a large ice cube.

  5. Pour the whiskey.

  6. Mix for about 20-30 seconds to gently dilute and cool the drink.

  7. Squeeze orange peel over the glass (to release the oils), rub it around the rim of the glass, and add it to the drink.

Modern method (with syrup – cleaner profile)

  1. Pour into a mixing glass:

    • 60 ml whiskey

    • 10 ml sugar syrup

    • 2–3 dashes bitters

  2. Add ice.

  3. Mix for 20–30 seconds.

  4. Strain into a glass with a large ice cube.

  5. Season with orange zest.

How to choose the right whiskey?

Bourbon

  • sweeter profile

  • notes of vanilla, caramel

  • more gentle and accessible

Rye

  • spicier

  • drier finish

  • more authentic historical version

If you want a classic, go for rye.
If you want a smoother, modern profile – bourbon.

Professional tips

Use large clear ice cubes – they melt more slowly and dilute the drink less.
Don't overdo it with the sugar – an Old Fashioned should be dry.
Bitters are key – experiment (orange bitters, chocolate bitters).
Don't stir for too long – you don't want to turn it into water.

Why is the Old Fashioned so special?

It is a minimalist drink that reveals the quality of the whiskey used. It has nothing to hide. Every detail - from the ice to the bitters - is important.

It is a cocktail for people who want to enjoy the spirit, not mask it.

FAQ – Old Fashioned

1. What is the difference between an Old Fashioned and a Manhattan?

The Old Fashioned contains only whiskey, sugar, bitters, and ice. The Manhattan also contains sweet vermouth, which gives it a herbal and more complex character. The Old Fashioned is drier and emphasizes the whiskey itself more.

2.Which is better, bourbon or rye whiskey?

It depends on your preference. Rye is historically more authentic and spicier. Bourbon is sweeter, smoother, and more popular in the modern version of the drink.

3. Can I use sugar syrup instead of sugar cubes?

Yes. Sugar syrup ensures faster preparation and more even mixing. However, the traditional method uses sugar cubes directly in the glass.

4. Why is a large ice cube used?

The large cube melts more slowly, which means less dilution and a more consistent taste throughout the drink.

5. Does cherry or orange belong in an Old Fashioned?

The modern classic mainly uses orange peel because of its essential oils. Cherry is optional and more commonly used in the American style.
