Fettercairn 12 Year Old is the official entry-level single malt whisky from the Fettercairn distillery (Highlands), which is part of Whyte & Mackay. The distillery is known for its “tropical house style” — a style where fruity and exotic notes play a significant role.
Distillation follows traditional Scottish methods in copper stills, with the distillery using a unique “irrigator ring” system that washes the back of the still necks, helping to cool the condensing vapors and contributing to the purity and smoothness of the resulting distillate.
Whisky matures exclusively in American white oak casks (ex-bourbon casks).
On the nose, there are notes of vanilla, pear, and subtle spices. More delicate notes of citrus peels, fresh orange zest, and tropical fruit emerge.
On the palate, the whisky is creamy, smooth, with sweet notes of tropical fruit, ripe peaches, or nectarines, combined with gentle spiciness (ginger, cloves) and hints of roasted coffee or black caramel.
In the finish, sultanas, caramel, and gentle spices reveal themselves, while fruity notes remain present.
Best served neat, or with a drop of water, which can help unveil its delicate layers of fruit and spices. It is suitable as an aperitif or for slow sipping during quiet moments. Pairs well with lighter desserts – e.g., fruit tarts, crème brûlée, or baked pears – or with mild cheeses that won’t dominate.
