Fettercairn 12 Year Old
Pronunciation: {Feterkern}Fettercairn 12 Year Old is the official entry-level single malt whisky from the Fettercairn distillery (Highlands), which belongs to Whyte & Mackay. The distillery is known for its "tropical house style" - a style where fruity and exotic notes play a significant role.
Distillation follows traditional Scottish methods in copper stills, with the distillery using a unique "irrigator ring" system that washes the back of the stills, helping to cool the condensing vapors and contributing to the purity and smoothness of the final distillate.
The whisky is aged exclusively in American white oak barrels (ex-bourbon casks).
The aroma (nose) reveals notes of vanilla, pear and delicate spices. More subtle notes of citrus peel, fresh orange zest and tropical fruit are added.
On the palate, the whiskey is creamy and smooth, with sweet notes of tropical fruit, ripe peaches, and nectarines, combined with a subtle spiciness (ginger, cloves) and hints of roasted coffee and black caramel.
The finish reveals sultanas, caramel, and delicate spices, while the fruity notes remain present.
This whiskey is best served neat or with a drop of water, which can help reveal its delicate layers of fruit and spices. It is suitable as an aperitif or for slow sipping in quiet moments. It goes well with lighter desserts – such as fruit cakes, crème brûlée or baked pears – or with mild cheeses that will not dominate.
