Talisker is a traditional Scottish brand of Island whisky, based on the Isle of Skye. It is one of the island’s most renowned and historically significant distilleries. Located on the shores of Loch Harport, Talisker has been an integral part of the local whisky tradition since the 19th century. The distillery specialises in producing bold island single malt whisky with a smoky character, peppery spice and subtle maritime salinity, reflecting the rugged coastal environment of north-west Scotland.

The Isle of Skye and whisky character

The character of Talisker whisky is closely linked to the natural conditions of the Isle of Skye. Harsh weather, strong winds and the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean naturally influence both its flavour and aroma. Since 1972, malted barley has been sourced from the Glen Ord maltings, with peat levels averaging around 22 ppm. This level of smokiness provides a balanced foundation, complemented by spicy, fruity and salty notes without excessive peat intensity.

Distillery history

The distillery was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. Although its annual production is modest compared to larger Scottish distilleries, Talisker has built a strong international reputation. A distinctive feature of the production process is the configuration of the stills: two are used for the first distillation and three for the second. One of these dates back to a period when triple distillation was experimented with at Talisker, contributing to the whisky’s full-bodied and oily character that remains evident today.

Best-known Talisker whiskies

A major milestone in the brand’s history was its inclusion in the Classic Malts range in 1988. Among the best-selling expressions is Talisker 10 Year Old, considered the core expression of the distillery and the best representation of its style. It delivers a classic combination of smoke, spice and maritime salinity. Another iconic release is Talisker Storm, a more intense whisky crafted from a selection of casks, focusing on a bolder island character and a more powerful flavour profile.
