Tabu Classic Absinth is an authentic German "Verte" type absinthe, meaning green, made according to a traditional 19th-century recipe. It is produced in the city of Essen, at the Felix Rauter GmbH distillery, which has a long history and is among the pioneers of absinthe production in Germany. This absinthe is exceptional not only for its strong character and high alcohol content (55 %), but also because it contains the maximum allowed amount of thujone – up to 35 mg/kg, placing it among the strongest legal absinthes in Europe.
The base of production is pure wine distillate and a macerate of a blend of ten herbs, with wormwood, green anise, and fennel being the dominant ingredients. The natural green color is achieved without the use of artificial dyes, resulting in an elegant and non-neon shade that appears trustworthy and traditional. Unlike some commercial absinthes, it contains no added sugar, thus maintaining a drier and more authentic character.
The aroma is dominated by anise notes with sweet tones of sweet wood and fennel, complemented by a subtle herbal and slightly floral undertone. On the palate, the absinthe presents itself as strong, dry, and spicy. Distinct herbal notes, a light spiciness, and natural sweetness create a complex and intense profile. The finish is long and dry, with a pronounced herbal ending and a gentle hint of spice.
Traditionally, it is served diluted with cold water over a sugar cube placed on a special spoon – upon contact with water, the "louche" effect occurs, resulting in a milky cloudiness that releases aromas and softens the taste. However, Tabu Classic also tastes excellent without sugar – just with ice-cold water or in original cocktails, where its herbal intensity shines.
Tabu Classic Absinth is the ideal choice for anyone looking for a true absinthe with character, history, and uncompromising flavor. Great for a ritual experience as well as for experimenting in mixed drinks – no compromises, no added sugar, just pure herbal strength.
