Tabu

Tabu is produced by renowned German manufacturer Felix Rauter GmbH & Co. KG, based in Essen and one of the oldest distilleries in the country, founded in 1853. Since then, it has remained a family business with a long tradition of producing herbal spirits, including absinthe.

The distillery's original product is called ‘Tabu’, which appeared before World War I as a vermouth distillate. After the ban on absinthe in 1923, production was stopped. In 2000, after the ban was lifted, the Rauter family decided to revive the historic recipe and relaunch the Tabu Absinthe brand, including the Classic, Red, Dry and Strong variants.

The gradual production of Tabu Absinth is based on the careful maceration of natural herbs (led by wormwood, anise and fennel) in sugar-free wine distillate, which preserves its intense, uncompromising taste. This is followed by distillation, during which the front and back fractions are carefully separated and only water is added to the final product. Thujone is regulated to a limit of 35 mg/kg, which is the limit set by European regulations and guarantees the strong absinthe category.

The brand emphasises natural ingredients, proven traditional quality and exceptional taste consistency. Although the manufacturer does not provide a detailed list of ingredients (the recipe is strictly confidential), it states in its official statements: Exclusive natural ingredients, pure and dry; sugar-free; thujone at the maximum permitted limit.

Since its launch in 2000, Tabu has become one of the first and most distinctive absinthes produced in Germany and has gradually established itself as one of the best-known European absinthe brands outside its traditional origins in France and Switzerland.
