Tabu is produced by the renowned German manufacturer Felix Rauter GmbH & Co. KG, located in Essen and is one of the oldest distilleries in the country – established back in 1853. Since then, it has remained a family business with a long tradition of producing herbal spirits, including absinthe.

The original product of this distillery is called “Tabu,” which appeared before World War I as a vermouth distillate. After the declaration of the absinthe ban in 1923, production was halted. In 2000, after the ban was lifted, the Rauter family decided to revive the historical recipe and bring back the Tabu Absinth brand, including the variants Classic, Red, Dry, and Strong.

The gradual production of Tabu Absinth is based on the careful maceration of natural herbs (led by wormwood, anise, and fennel) in sugar-free wine distillate, preserving the intense, uncompromising flavor. Subsequently, distillation occurs, during which the heads and tails are meticulously separated, and only water is added to the final product. Thujone is regulated to a limit of 35 mg/kg, which is the limit set by European regulations and guarantees the category of strong absinths.

The brand emphasizes natural composition, proven traditional quality, and exceptional flavor consistency. Although the manufacturer does not provide a detailed list of ingredients (the recipe is strictly confidential), official statements mention: Exclusive natural ingredients, pure and dry; sugar-free; thujone at the maximum permitted limit.

Since its market re-entry in 2000, Tabu has become one of the first and most prominent absinths produced in Germany and has gradually established itself as one of the most well-known brands of European absinthe outside the traditional origins in France and Switzerland.
