Hampden 4 Year Old Magnum Series #3
Hampden 4 Year Magnum Series #3 is a Jamaican rum from the legendary Hampden Estate distillery, released under the curation of the Italian distributor Velier as part of the exclusive artistic collection Magnum Series.
Each edition of this series combines the world of distillation with the world of photography – the label of this bottle features the work of photographer Cristina de Middel from Magnum Photos.
This rum is distilled in 2021 and aged for four years in a tropical climate, bottled at a strength of 60% alcohol.
Hampden rum is made from molasses in traditional copper pot stills, with fermentation occurring naturally without artificial yeasts – utilizing dunder (residuals from previous fermentation) and wild microorganisms. This long and lively fermentation process, along with Jamaica's unique climate, gives the rum its distinctive “funky” identity.
After distillation, it is aged in a tropical warehouse for four years, intensifying extraction from the oak barrels and accelerating maturation. Thanks to the tropical climate, the rum after four years is comparable to older European versions and gains exceptional depth of flavor. The total ester content in this rum reaches around 1500–1600 g/hl AA, which is at the limit of possibility and ensures extreme aromatic expression.
In aroma, Hampden 4y Magnum Series #3 presents itself as an explosion of tropical fruit – bananas, pineapple, mango, and fermented notes accompanied by typical Jamaican notes of licorice, acetone, and spicy wood. Hints of medicinal undertones also appear in the scent, adding depth and character.
The taste is full, robust, and rich – combining fruit with traces of smoke, walnuts, ginger, and a salty hint. Due to the high alcohol content, it feels intense, but when diluted with a drop of water, it opens up to softer, creamy layers with a fruity-acidic finish.
It shines best neat in a tulip glass at room temperature as a tasting rum – for discerning lovers of strong Caribbean style.
