Boann Single Pot Still Madeira Cask
Fill up your tasting glass and take your experience to the next level!
Boann Single Pot Still Madeira Cask originally matured in ex-bourbon casks from the famous Brown-Forman of Kentucky, made from American oak (Quercus Alba) with a heavy char.
These casks were filled with a blended mash distillate of Single Pot Still, which contained malted barley, unmalted barley, oats, and rye. All these grains come from Ireland and are locally grown.
In collaboration with the renowned Madeira house, Justino's, the distillery acquired some of their finest casks after Madeira wines Tinta Negro (1998 and 2000), Boal (1999), and Sercial (1999, 2000, and 2006) Madeira Colheita single varietals. They gained access to these casks through a friendship that developed from a previous special collaboration.
The wines were fortified and underwent the canteiro process, where the wine matures in casks at naturally high temperatures in the cask storage room, mimicking the sea maturation during maritime voyages in the past on Portuguese galleons in the Middle Ages.
These Madeira wines ranged from sweet to medium-bodied to dry, offering depth and breadth of terroir from the volcanic island of Madeira. The label design of this expression speaks of water, which is an essential ingredient in whisky production. It is also a tribute to the flowing waters of the River Boyne, as well as the North Atlantic Ocean surrounding the Madeira islands.
A vibrant aroma with enticing notes of apples and peaches, followed by wonderful honey tones, toasted oak, spices, with a hint of floral scents playing nicely in the background. The taste is velvety smooth with peaches and cream on the entry, layered with vanilla, walnuts, dried fruit cake, and a gentle minerality throughout. The finish is long with fresh lemon oil and lingering spicy notes. A tropical voyage through the Atlantic islands!
