Ardbeg is one of the most iconic Scottish distilleries on the Isle of Islay and is synonymous with intense peaty single malt whisky. The distillery is located in solitude by a small bay on the southern coast of Islay, in an area that was once known for illegal distillation. Its remote location and harsh conditions provided an ideal refuge for whisky smugglers even before the production was legalized.

History of Ardbeg Distillery

The legal distillery was founded in 1815 by John McDougall, laying the foundations for a brand that quickly built an exceptional reputation. Although Ardbeg has a smaller production volume than neighboring distilleries Laphroaig and Lagavulin, its Islay whisky has always been highly sought after for its distinctive character and quality.

Periods of Decline and Rebirth

Throughout the 20th century, Ardbeg went through several challenging periods. The distillery was closed in 1981, reopened in a limited capacity in 1989, and closed again in 1996. A turning point came in 1997 when the distillery was purchased by Glenmorangie Company. This was followed by extensive renovations and a return of Ardbeg to the absolute top of peaty whiskies.
