Ardbeg Anthology The Ultimate: The Beithir’s Tale 15 Year Old
Ardbeg Anthology The Beithir’s Tale is the pinnacle edition of the experimental Anthology series from the Ardbeg distillery. This 15-year-old version, called “The Ultimate”, represents a unique approach – the single malt whisky is aged exclusively in so-called designer bourbon casks, which have been adapted to highlight creamy, vanilla and sweet notes while retaining the distinctive peaty and smoky character typical of Ardbeg.
These casks are specially prepared during production: instead of being dried in a kiln, they are air-seasoned, then intensively toasted and lightly charred. This process gives the barrels a greater ability to impart sweeter and creamier notes to the distillate without mutating Ardbeg's basic smoky-peaty "DNA."
The aroma of Ardbeg opens up significantly - it is oily, spicy, with notes of molasses, creosote and smoked herbs. Gradually, burnt apples, dried raisins, creamy notes, menthol and eucalyptus, pine needles and fennel appear.
The taste of the whisky is impressively balanced - initially a brightly sparkling body that transitions into peat smoke, roasted coffee, and currants, with sweet lime and balsam contrasting the smoky notes. The finish is long and slow, with hints of vanilla, smoked butter, spice, and a trace of charcoal smoke.
This whiskey is best served neat or with a single drop of water to open up its hidden layers—subtle sweetness and herbs—without losing its distinctive structure.
Its intensity and complexity make it suitable for slow tasting. It pairs well with dark chocolate with a hint of salt, smoked cheeses, or delicately caramelized desserts that can highlight its sweet and smoky character.
