Sangiovese is the most widespread Italian variety of red wine and the base of iconic wines like Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. It originates from Tuscany, where it still thrives best, but it is also successfully cultivated in other regions of central and southern Italy. The variety is known for its lively acidity, medium body, and an aroma that beautifully reflects the sunny temperament of Tuscany.

Characteristics of Sangiovese Berries and Taste

Sangiovese produces medium-sized, thin-skinned berries with a naturally higher acidity that shapes its fresh expression. The taste is dominated by notes of cherries, sour cherries, and subtle herbal or spicy nuances, often with a touch of dried tomatoes or tobacco. In warmer areas, it offers a fuller body and riper fruit, while in higher altitudes, it appears more elegant and mineral. Aging in wood imparts vanilla, toasty, and subtly balsamic notes, which deepen its complexity.

What to Pair with Sangiovese

Due to its juiciness and medium body, Sangiovese pairs wonderfully with Italian cuisine – pasta, pizza, tomato sauces, or grilled meats. It also complements cheeses with a medium intensity of aroma and dishes with herbal characteristics. Serve at 15–17 °C to highlight its fruitiness and elegant acidity.
