Sangiovese is the most widely planted Italian red wine variety and the foundation of iconic wines such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. It originates from Tuscany, where it still thrives best, but is successfully grown across central and southern Italy. The variety is known for its lively acidity, medium body and aromatic profile that beautifully reflects the sunny Tuscan character.

Grape and taste of Sangiovese

Sangiovese has medium-sized, thin-skinned berries and naturally higher acidity that shapes its fresh expression. The flavour profile is dominated by cherry and sour cherry notes, accompanied by subtle herbal and spicy nuances, often with a hint of dried tomato or tobacco. Warmer regions offer fuller body and riper fruit, while higher-altitude vineyards bring more elegance and minerality. Oak ageing adds vanilla, toasted and lightly balsamic tones that enhance its overall complexity.

How to serve Sangiovese

Thanks to its juiciness and medium body, Sangiovese pairs wonderfully with Italian cuisine – pasta, pizza, tomato-based dishes and grilled meats. It also complements medium-flavoured cheeses and herb-forward dishes. Serve at 15–17 °C to highlight its fruitiness and elegant acidity.
