Primitivo is one of the most distinctive Italian red wines, typical of the Puglia region in southern Italy. It is known for producing full-bodied, fruit-forward wines celebrated for their intensity, gentle natural sweetness and velvety texture. Primitivo is genetically related to Zinfandel, yet in Puglia it develops its own warm, Mediterranean-driven personality.

Grape Characteristics and Flavour of Primitivo

The grapes of Primitivo are dark, small to medium-sized and naturally rich in sugar, resulting in wines with substantial body and a smooth mouthfeel. Expect flavours of ripe blackberries, plums, cherries and subtle spicy or chocolate notes. Younger wines feel fresh and juicy, while those aged in oak develop vanilla and tannic tones that add depth and complexity.

How to Serve Primitivo

Thanks to its rich fruit profile, Primitivo pairs beautifully with Italian cuisine, grilled meats, beef dishes or moderately spicy foods. It also complements stronger cheeses and hearty pasta sauces. Serve it at cellar temperature, 16–18 °C, to highlight its structure and layered flavours.
