Primitivo is one of the most characteristic Italian red wines, typical of the Puglia region in southern Italy. It is a variety known for its rich, full-bodied, and fruity wines, celebrated for their intensity, gentle sweetness in the fruit, and velvety texture. Primitivo is genetically related to the Zinfandel variety, but in Puglia, it develops its own warmth-shaped temperament.

Characteristics of Primitivo Berries and Taste

The berries of Primitivo are dark, small to medium-sized and naturally rich in sugar, which is reflected in the wine's full body and smooth texture. The taste is dominated by notes of ripe blackberries, plums, cherries, and subtle spicy or chocolate nuances. Younger wines are fresh and juicy, while barrel-aged versions bring vanilla and tannin notes that enrich their overall complexity.

How to Serve Primitivo

Due to its full fruity expression, Primitivo pairs excellently with Italian cuisine, grilled meats, beef, or spicier dishes. It also complements cheeses with a stronger aroma and rich pasta sauces. Serve it at cellar temperature 16–18 °C to fully highlight its structure and depth.
