Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old
Pronunciation: {Rojal Lochnegár}Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old is a classic Highlands single malt whisky from the Royal Lochnagar distillery, located near Balmoral Castle in the Royal Deeside area. This whisky has a rich royal history – it became popular with the royal family in the 19th century, and the distillery was granted the right to use the prefix "Royal".
Barley malt and pure water from local springs are used in its production. Distillation takes place in copper stills (typically wash and spirit stills) according to traditional Scottish methods. The whisky is aged for 12 years, primarily in bourbon barrels, which give it a subtle underlying sweetness and oak tones.
The aroma of this whisky is accompanied by a creamy, aromatic profile with notes of hay, sweet barley, ripe fruit, citrus peel, and a subtle touch of oak.
The taste reveals medium sweetness, subtle smoke, spicy accents (ginger, cinnamon), sugar lollipops and demerara sugar, with hints of toasted spices. The finish is medium-long and drier, with notes of grass, honey, subtle bitterness, and an undertone of oak.
Best served neat or with a small amount of water to reveal the more delicate layers of aroma and flavor. Thanks to its smooth and mild nature, it is also suitable for everyday drinking. It can be a wonderful accompaniment to delicate desserts, baked fruit, or fine chocolate – combinations that do not disrupt its profile but complement its sweet and spicy nuances.
