Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old is a classic highlands single malt whisky from the Royal Lochnagar distillery, located near Balmoral Castle in the Royal Deeside area. This whisky has a rich royal history - it became a favorite of the royal family in the 19th century, and the distillery was granted the right to use the prefix “Royal.”
The production uses barley malt and pure water from local springs. Distillation takes place in copper stills (typically wash and spirit stills) following traditional Scottish methods. The whisky matures for 12 years primarily in bourbon casks, which provide a gentle underlying sweetness and oak notes.
On the nose, this whisky is accompanied by a creamy, aromatic profile with notes of hay, sweet barley, ripe fruit, citrus peel and a subtle touch of oak.
On the palate, it reveals medium sweetness, gentle smoke, spicy accents (ginger, cinnamon), candy lollipops and demerara sugar, with touches of toasted spices. The finish is medium-long and drier – notes of grass, honey, gentle bitterness, and an oak undertone emerge.
It is best served neat, or with a small amount of water to reveal the finer layers of aroma and flavor. Due to its smooth and mild nature, it is also suitable for everyday sipping. It can be a beautiful companion to delicate desserts, baked fruits, or fine chocolate – pairings that will not overpower its profile but will complement its sweet and spicy nuances.
