Naga Java Reserve is an Indonesian dark rum from the Naga distillery on the island of Java. It has a volume of 0.7 l, an alcohol content of 40 %, and offers an authentic experience rooted in traditional Asian fermentation and distillation techniques.
The rum is produced by fermenting a blend of molasses from sugar cane and yeast from malted red rice in teak barrels, up to about 12 % alcohol. This "cane wine" is then distilled in two ways: 52 % is double distilled in traditional Chinese pot stills to 60 - 65 % ABV, and 48 % using column distillation to 92 %.
This combined process provides a balanced, complex distillate with a smooth fullness. The history of Batavia Arrack – which is the original name for Indonesian distillates – dates back to the 17th century and has significantly shaped the culture of local rum production. The distillery revives this long tradition in northern Java.
The rum first ages for 3 years in jati (teak wood) barrels, which adds exotic spicy notes, woody and smoky undertones. It then spends 4 years in ex-bourbon barrels made of American oak, which imparts subtle notes of vanilla, caramel, and sweet woody nuances.
