Glen Scotia 12 Year Old Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3
Glen Scotia Icons of Campbeltown Release No.3 represents a limited-edition whisky celebrating the heritage and distinctive style of the Campbeltown region – once known as the “Whisky Capital of the World.” This 12-year-old single malt is the third release in the prestigious Icons of Campbeltown series and perfectly captures the balance between maritime minerality, fruity freshness, and warming oak spice.
The whisky is distilled in traditional copper pot stills at the Glen Scotia Distillery, which has been operating continuously since 1832. It matures for 12 years in carefully selected American oak ex-bourbon casks, followed by final maturation in barrels after Tawny Port wine. This maturation adds layers of complexity – combining coastal salinity with rich dried fruits and a subtle touch of smoke.
It draws inspiration from the legend of Wulver – a good-hearted mythical creature with the body of a man and the head of a wolf, whose figure is carved into a medieval market cross in the center of Campbeltown.
According to Scottish folklore, Wulver was a symbol of generosity and humility – he lived in a cave at the foot of a hill, spent his days fishing, and left his catch on the window sills of poor residents. This story reflects the spirit of community and selfless help that still shapes the Campbeltown community and the Glen Scotia brand today.
Bottled at cask strength (51,7 % ABV), unchill-filtered and with no added colouring, it retains its natural texture and full-bodied character.
The aroma reveals juicy forest fruits, candied nuts, and fresh red apples coated in caramel sweetness. The taste is dominated by layers of dried figs and orange peel intertwined with a delicate praline tone, which brings richness and balance, gradually transitioning into a salty, slightly oily tone typical of Campbeltown.
The finish is long, warm, and rich, with lingering notes of nuts, sherry, toffee, and sea salt.
This whisky is best enjoyed slowly at room temperature or with a drop of water to unveil its full depth and delicate layers of fruit and oak.
