Kilkerran 12 Year Old
Pronunciation: {Kil-keran}Kilkerran 12 Year Old is a whisky produced at the Glengyle distillery, which opened after more than 75 years (originally in 1872, reopened in 2004). Distillation takes place only for about three months a year and the entire output goes to single malt whisky.
Balance is achieved through maturation in a combination of 70 % ex-bourbon casks and 30 % ex-sherry casks, which completes its characteristic layered tones.
The nose is dominated by marzipan, hazelnuts, honey cherries, dried fruit (dates, figs) and a subtle peaty smoke. The taste is velvety, oily, with layers of citrus (lemon cake), vanilla, caramel and honey, complemented by a spicy finish – black pepper, saltiness and a hint of peat.
Best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, to bring out the oiliness, sweetness and salty undertones characteristic of Campbeltown. Some reviews recommend adding a few drops of water to bring out the freshness of mandarin and honey.
The bottles are filled with 46 % alcohol and have a volume of 0,7 l.
