Kilkerran is a whisky produced at the Glengyle Distillery, which was originally founded in 1872 by William Mitchell. During its early years, it survived financial turmoil (1919–1925), then was closed and the buildings served only as warehouses or a clubhouse - and thus they have survived to this day. In 2000 (or 2004), the Mitchell family - belonging to the Springbank clan - took over the site, restored it, and began distilling again, reviving Campbeltown as a recognized whisky region.

The whisky is traditionally distilled under the Kilkerran brand, not Glengyle - that name has already been registered by another company. The name Kilkerran is derived from the Gaelic name for the location “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain” - the site where the monastery of St. Kieran once stood, the site of present-day Campbeltown. Initially, the distillery launched with limited editions from the Work-in-Progress series (2009–2015), gradually establishing a core range - the first 12-year-old edition was released in 2016.

Glengyle operates briefly — only about 3 months a year, as it shares a team and facilities with Springbank. It continues to use malt from Springbank, as it has not yet utilized its own milling facilities. The whisky is lightly peated (about 12–15 ppm phenols) and matures primarily in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks; occasionally, port or rum casks are also used. The distillery thus brings the elegance of Campbeltown – oiliness, hints of maritime salinity, a peaty touch, fruit, and vanilla — a complex style close to the heart of connoisseurs.
