Dunaj is a modern Slovak red wine variety and one of the most successful Slovak newly bred cultivars. It was created by crossing St. Laurent, Blue Portugal and Svatovavrinecké, with the aim of developing a full-bodied, harmonious and well-structured red wine suited to Slovak vineyard conditions. Dunaj is appreciated for its deep colour, intense aromatics and naturally high extract.

Grape Characteristics and Flavour of Dunaj

Dunaj has dark, small berries with thicker skins and a high level of pigments, giving the wine a vivid, almost inky colour. The flavour profile is rich and fruity, showing notes of blackberry, plum, sour cherry and subtle hints of spice or dark chocolate. Thanks to its higher extract, Dunaj tastes dense and complex, while ageing in wooden barrels adds vanilla and toasted nuances. The variety is characterised by soft tannins and a long, generous finish.

How to Serve Dunaj

Dunaj pairs beautifully with beef, game dishes, grilled meats and cheeses with medium to pronounced aromatics. Fuller styles also work excellently with rich sauces or dark chocolate. Serve at 16–18 °C to highlight its structure, depth and fruity richness.
