Highland whisky distillery Deanston is located on the banks of the River Teith, which serves as its main water source. The river, originating in the Trossachs mountains, is among the cleanest waterways in Scotland and significantly influences the character of local whisky production. Deanston was founded in 1965 on the site of a former 18th-century weaving workshop, in close proximity to the village of Doune in the Perthshire region.

Sustainable production in a historic building

The main part of the distillery is situated in a historic protected spinning mill, which still forms the heart of the production site. Thanks to its own turbine and dam that harness the energy of the River Teith, Deanston is energy self-sufficient and generates its own electricity. This approach ranks it among eco-friendly Scottish distilleries.

In 1971, the first Scottish single malt whisky named Old Bannockburn was created here. A year later, the distillery came under the ownership of Invergordon. After approximately eight years of closure, it was purchased by Burn Stewart Distillers for £2.1 million, and production was shortly thereafter resumed. A few years later, gin production was also expanded at Deanston.

Warehouses, maturation, and portfolio

Deanston has two warehouses, where approximately 45,000 casks mature. Most of the capacity is used for maturing whisky for blended Scotch whiskies. An important part of the portfolio is the Scottish Leader brand, which has annual sales exceeding five million bottles worldwide.

Among the most famous single malts is Deanston Virgin Oak. It matures in new American oak casks. It is characterized by delicate notes of vanilla, honey, and a malty base. Another popular choice is Deanston 12 Year Old, maturing in bourbon casks, which offers a balanced expression with a creamy texture, fruity notes, and a natural sweetness typical of this distillery's style. In addition to these staples, Deanston also focuses on limited and independent bottlings.
