Benromach Contrasts: Peat Smoke 2014
This expression whisky, Benromach Peat Smoke 2014, is part of the Contrasts series, which allows the Benromach distillery to experiment beyond its traditional style.
Contrasts: Peat Smoke uses heavily peated barley with a pronounced phenol level (approx. 57 ppm). It was distilled in 2014 and matured in first-fill bourbon casks, then bottled at 46 % ABV.
On the nose, it presents rich peat smoke, vanilla, citrus peel, and delicate notes of apple and white chocolate.
The palate is smooth, showing hints of charred oak, honey, sweet ripe fruits, marshmallow, and lemon sorbet, all intertwined with sweet smoke. The finish is full and long, with lingering bonfire embers and sweet peat.
This expression showcases Benromach’s ability to create a whisky with a bold peaty profile within the Speyside region, which is typically not known for heavily peated styles - making it an intriguing alternative for smoke lovers.
