Angostura 7 Year Old rum comes from Trinidad & Tobago and is produced by Angostura Ltd, which is known not only for its aromatic bitters but also for its extensive portfolio of Caribbean rums.
This dark medium-bodied blend is a mix of light, medium, and heavy rums that have aged for a minimum of 7 years in charred ex-bourbon oak barrels, giving it a characteristic mahogany color and a complex flavor profile.
The production begins with the fermentation of molasses followed by distillation in modern continuous (column) distillation systems at Trinidad Distillers Ltd, which belongs to Angostura and is the last place for rum distillation in the country.
After blending, the rum is left for further aging – the Master blender returns the blend to the barrels to harmonize the flavors – a process known as “marry in cask.” The resulting product has 40% ABV, with no added sweeteners or added sugar (under ≤ 3 g/l).
The aroma features notes of bitter chocolate, caramel, vanilla, molasses, espresso, roasted nuts, and spices, among which a subtle oak and spicy hint can be discerned.
On the palate, the rum is medium to full-bodied – notes of caramel, honey, roasted nuts, coffee, and a hint of cinnamon emerge. The finish is medium-long, drier, with a dominance of cocoa, cinnamon, wood, and a lightly citrus-spicy aftertaste.
