Old Monk The Legend is a special edition limited bottle (shaped like the head of the founder) launched in 2013 by Mohan Meakin Limited. Although it has no official age statement, according to available information, it is aged in oak barrels for at least 7 to 12 years. The alcohol content is 42,8 %, typical for most products in the Old Monk range.
The aroma is softer and cleaner than the seven-year-old version, with notes of caramel, vanilla and wax, complemented by spicy hints of orange and banana peel. Oriental spices make the aroma a pleasant aromatic experience.
The taste is elegantly balanced – sweet caramel and vanilla have a gentle onset, accompanied by the citrus tang of orange and banana peel, complemented by spices, oak wood and honeydew. The mouthfeel reveals dried apricots, figs, and drinkable black tea of the Orange Pekoe type. The profile is less distinctly "molasses" than the 7-year-old version, but still richly sweet and includes notes of toffee and dried fruit.
The finish is medium-long, slightly dry with hints of salty caramel and spice. There are even very subtle tea or tobacco notes that add complexity and sophistication. The body is smooth, less viscous than typical 12-year-old rums, but surprisingly refined.
Several reviewers and the community rate The Legend as the most enjoyable of the Old Monk range – a smoother, fresher and more aromatically complex version with strong visual and nostalgic appeal.
Old Monk The Legend is also known for its iconic bottle shape and strong connection to the brand's culture. It looks like a gift edition, but also provides a taste experience with a smoother but complex profile suitable for sipping neat, on the rocks or in cocktails.
