Characteristics of Merlot Berries and Taste

Merlot berries are dark blue, medium-sized, with a higher sugar content, which results in a fuller body and smooth expression in the wine. Typical notes include blackcurrants, cherries, plums, and subtle chocolate or spicy nuances. Younger wines are fresh and fruity, while versions aged in wood bring vanilla, tobacco, or lightly toasted notes. Merlot is known for its softness, roundness, and harmonious structure, making it more approachable than, for example, Cabernet Sauvignon.

What to Pair with Merlot
