Piña Colada – a tropical legend in a glass
Piña Colada is one of the most famous and popular cocktails in the world. It is a symbol of the Caribbean, summer fun, and exotic vacations. The creamy combination of pineapple, coconut, and rum creates an unmistakable taste that has been enchanting lovers of mixed drinks for decades.
History of the Piña Colada cocktail
Origin in Puerto Rico
Piña Colada originates from Puerto Rico, where it is now the official national drink (since 1978). The name translates as "strained pineapple" (Spanish piña colada).
Who invented it?
There is some debate about which came first, but two main versions are most commonly cited:
1. Ramón „Monchito“ Marrero (1954)
The most widely accepted version says that the cocktail was created in 1954 by bartender Ramón Marrero at the Caribe Hilton hotel in San Juan. He reportedly experimented for three months before finding the perfect ratio of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice.
2. Ricardo García
According to another version, Piña Colada was also created at the Caribe Hilton hotel, but its creator was bartender Ricardo García, who used coconut cream as a substitute for the scarce coconut drink.
An even older legend
Some stories date back to the 19th century, when pirate Roberto Cofresí allegedly served his crew a drink made from rum, coconut, and pineapple to boost morale. However, there is no historical evidence to support this.

Professional tips for the perfect Piña Colada
✔ Use high-quality 100 % pineapple juice, not nectar.
✔ Mix the coconut cream well – it tends to separate.
✔ If you want a less sweet version, add a little lime juice.
✔ For a more intense flavor, you can use dark rum or a combination of white and golden rum.
✔ For a non-alcoholic version (Virgin Piña Colada), omit the rum and add more pineapple juice or a little coconut milk.
The popularity of the cocktail was greatly enhanced by Rupert Holmes' 1979 song "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)".
