Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original Formula is a French Cognac Grande Champagne, which follows the richer and livelier style of cognacs used in the 19th century for mixing classic cocktails. It was created in collaboration with cocktail historian David Wondrich and is inspired by the era when cognac was one of the essential spirits for drinks like Mint Julep, Brandy Crusta or punch.
The base is the Ugni Blanc variety from the Grande Champagne region, complemented by traditional production emphasizing a fuller and more concentrated expression. Double distillation in copper pot stills and aging in a combination of new oak and aged cognac barrels give the cognac fruity depth, subtle spice, and a structure suitable for mixed drinks.
In aroma and taste, it combines ripe juicy grapes, meadow flowers, acacia blossom, a hint of cedar, honey, and spice. Pierre Ferrand 1840 Original Formula shines neat, on the rocks, but especially in classic cocktails, where it can bring fruity intensity, a drier cognac base, and elegant historical character.
