Nine Leaves Ex-Spanish Oak Single Cask Distilled 2018

Nine Leaves Ex-Spanish Oak Single Cask Distilled 2018 was matured for 7 years in a single Spanish oak cask, which gave it an original and vibrant aromatic profile. As a single cask edition, each bottle is an authentic reflection of the individual barrel.

Behind the Nine Leaves brand stands Yoshiharu Takeuchi, who for many years handled the entire production process himself – from moving casks to bottling. At the end of 2023, he decided to close the distillery. A few months later, La Maison & Velier acquired all remaining stocks of ageing rums and the final batch of white rums, continuing and developing his exceptional legacy.

Nine Leaves rums are produced using pure underground spring water and traditional Japanese Kokuto sugar from Okinawa, which gives them distinctive depth. Fermentation lasts approximately four days, developing a rich aromatic base.

Distillation takes place in two Forsyth’s copper pot stills – one inspired by the Chichibu style and the other by Glenmorangie. This combination ensures remarkable balance and enhances the aromatic complexity of the final spirit. After distillation, the rums mature in various types of casks at two different locations – a warehouse exposed to significant temperature fluctuations and an abandoned mine with high humidity and low temperatures, both of which significantly influence their development.

On the nose, it is deep and surprising, revealing medicinal notes of cardamom, saffron, red orange, and mango, complemented by hints of walnuts and chestnuts. Over time, nuances of fig, incense, cocoa powder, and Havana cigar emerge.

The palate is rich, full, and highly structured. Initial notes of pine resin, burnt cane sugar, camphor, and a subtle asphalt nuance evolve into salty and mineral tones with hints of liquorice, earthiness, and curry spice. The finish is dense, long, and complex, with lingering impressions of liquorice, sandalwood, incense, and delicate cardamom tea.

This distinctive Japanese rum is intended for experienced tasters seeking an unconventional flavour experience and an authentic expression of artisanal craftsmanship. It is a collector-worthy release that represents the pinnacle of the Nine Leaves portfolio.
