Illy Guatemala is part of the exclusive Arabica Selection line, dedicated to single-origin Arabica. It comes from selected mountainous regions, including Fraijanes and Huehuetenango in Guatemala, where it grows at altitudes of up to 2,000 meters above sea level. The soil is rich and the environment unspoiled, with temperatures moderated by warm winds from Mexico - ideal conditions for coffee trees to mature and develop complex aromas.
After harvesting, the beans are exported to Trieste in Italy, where they are individually roasted according to a precisely defined profile and packaged in hermetically sealed pressure cans filled with inert gas to preserve their freshness for up to 24 months.
Guatemalan Arabica is characterized by a rich body, distinctive aroma, and subtle bitterness with a dominant hint of chocolate. The flavor also reveals notes of caramel, honey, and citrus fruits – a complex combination of sweetness and subtle acidity that adds elegance and depth.
The acidity and bitterness are low to medium (e.g., intensity ~5–8/10, acidity ~2/10), which gives the final profile a full but balanced enjoyment. The caffeine content is low (below 1,5 %), making it suitable for longer periods of drinking without a stimulating effect.
Illy Guatemala is designed primarily for espresso and lungo preparation, but it is also great in a moka pot, automatic coffee machine or filter. It excels wherever high extraction purity and profile details are preferred. Consumers appreciate its consistency – once the can is opened, the coffee retains its aroma for a long time if stored in a dry, cool, and dark place. It is packaged in a protective atmosphere in a tin can, which helps minimize oxidation even after opening.
