Grüner Veltliner is one of the most iconic Central European white wine varieties. Around the world, it is also known under names such as Veltliner (other regions), Veltlínske zelené (Slovakia, Czechia) or Zöldveltelini (Hungary). The variety is appreciated for its freshness, gentle spiciness and pale yellow colour.

Origin of the variety

Grüner Veltliner originates primarily from Austria, where it is considered the national grape. It also thrives in Slovakia and Moravia. The berries are medium-sized, greenish-yellow with thin skins and a high juice content. In warmer vintages, they can develop a soft golden hue.

What does Grüner veltliner taste like?

It typically offers flavours of green apple, citrus and pear, complemented by its characteristic peppery spiciness. Wines from cooler climates tend to have higher acidity and more minerality, while warmer regions produce fuller-bodied styles with a smoother texture and hints of honey.
