Caffé Vergnano

Caffè Vergnano is the oldest Italian coffee roaster, founded in 1882 by Domenico Vergnano as a small coffee shop in Chieri, near Turin in the Piedmont region.

From humble beginnings in a pharmacy, Domenico gradually made a name for himself, opening his first shop in Turin and building a family business that expanded with each generation. In 1930, the company took a big step forward when the Vergnano family bought their own coffee plantation in Kenya, strengthening their control over the quality of raw materials right from the source.

In the 1970s, Carlo and Franco Vergnano expanded production and in 1986 acquired the prestigious Casa del Caffè restaurant in Turin. Today, the brand operates in production facilities covering approximately 13,500 m² in Santena (Piedmont), with dozens of automated production lines.

The coffee is exported to more than 80 – 90 countries, including over 170 Caffè Vergnano 1882 cafés in more than 27 countries.

Five generations of the Vergnano family still control the business and emphasise the ‘origin per origin’ approach, i.e. separate slow roasting of each variety of bean (lasting 18–22 minutes). This approach guarantees even roasting, maximum aroma development of each bean and an excellent balance of flavours.

The company demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, introducing compostable capsules, eco-friendly packaging, recyclable materials and social responsibility projects such as the 2018 Women in Coffee initiative, which supports women on coffee farms.

In 2021, Caffè Vergnano entered into a significant global partnership with Coca-Cola HBC, which acquired a 30 % stake and is helping to distribute the brand more effectively in international markets, while the family has retained a controlling interest.
