Borovička Rusínska is a traditional Slovak spirit that draws inspiration from the Rusyn cultural region in the Ondavská vrchovina and Čierna hora mountains. Production is concentrated in the products of the company Vanapo and other regional distributors, emphasising strong links to natural resources – mainly high-quality demineralised water springing from the foothills.
Production begins with the use of very fine spirit, which is then flavoured with natural juniper distillate obtained by fractional distillation of juniper berries from the Poloniny Carpathians, harvested after the first frost, when they are at their most aromatic.
After flavouring, the distillate is diluted with spring water and the result has a standard alcohol content of 40 %.
Borovička Rusínska has an intense aroma reminiscent of fresh caramel and pine needles – soft and natural, not chemically artificial. The taste is dry, fresh and distinctly juniper – its stronger tones are typical of ‘juniper brandy’ and very similar to gin, but with a more pronounced spicy depth.
