Ardmore Legacy
Pronunciation: {Árd-mór}Ardmore Legacy is the current interpretation of the traditional Highland single malt from the Ardmore distillery. It was introduced in 2014 as the successor to the “Ardmore Traditional” edition, and although it is not a 12-year-old expression, it carries a gentle peat note that has become a distinctive feature of the brand.
Ardmore Legacy whisky is made using a combination of malt – approximately 80 % peated malt and 20 % unpeated malt – achieving a balance between smoke and softer tones.
The edition uses typical casks, including so-called quarter casks, which provide greater wood-to-spirit contact and influence the spicy and oaky elements in the profile.
Peat from the Highlands is used, giving a gentle smokiness, but the smoky character is more subtle than dominant. The whisky is bottled at 40 % ABV.
On the nose, Ardmore Legacy leans more towards a “salty/spicy” style rather than purely sweet: gentle barbecue smoke, earthy tones, cinnamon, honey, and vanilla caramel intertwine in the background. At times, a note of heather honey emerges.
On the palate, the smoky note is more pronounced (coal smoke), with dry oak, drops of pear, and delicate grassy tones. After a while, citrus peel and heather blossom appear, adding contrast. The finish is fairly long, with peaty smoke, dry spiciness, and a touch of honeyed barley.
It is best enjoyed neat at room temperature. Adding a few drops of water can open up the smoky note and bring forward the sweet tones (honey, vanilla). Thanks to its combination of smoke and sweetness, it serves as a great introduction to peated whiskies for those seeking a milder entry point.
