It is the year 1876 and at the prestigious horse racing event National Produce Stakes in Ireland, a stallion named The Tyrconnell enters the race. The odds are clear – the chance of winning is slim, only 100:1. Yet, this horse shocks everyone and wins the race. The event captivated Andrew A. Watt, the owner of Watt Distillery in Londonderry, so much that he decided to name his whiskey in honor of this surprising victory. Thus, the The Tyrconnell brand was born, whose label still bears the image of the winning horse.

Watt's distillery, established in the 18th century, was one of the most significant in Ireland at that time. Tyrconnell quickly made a name for itself and became a popular whiskey not only at home but also in the United States, where it was one of the best-selling Irish single malts before the era of prohibition. Unfortunately, like many other distilleries, Watt Distillery could not withstand the economic and political upheavals of the early 20th century. Around 1925, it was closed, and the Tyrconnell brand fell into obscurity for decades.

The turnaround came in 1988, when the brand was revived by John Teeling at his Cooley Distillery. Tyrconnell returned to the market as a smooth and elegant single malt that quickly found fans. Today, it is under the management of Kilbeggan Distilling Company, which is part of the portfolio of the Japanese giant Suntory Global Spirits. The modern rendition retains the legacy of the past – it is double distilled, giving it a characteristic purity and lightness. It primarily matures in bourbon casks, which impart notes of honey, vanilla, caramel, and subtle spices.

The classic version of Tyrconnell Single Malt is the gateway to the brand's world, but the true diversity is shown in the special editions. Among the most famous are the 10-year-old whiskeys finished in Madeira, Port or Sherry. Each brings a different character – from sweet fruity notes to spicy depth and a nutty touch. The most prestigious is the 16-year-old edition, which is one of the highlights of the portfolio. It gains a complex structure full of dried fruits, chocolate, and gentle spiciness, leaving a long and elegant impression.

Over the years, the Tyrconnell brand has earned multiple awards, such as a gold medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2004, and titles for “Best Irish Single Malt” in various categories. This proves that its return was not just a nostalgic gesture, but a true restart with an emphasis on quality.
