Tomintoul Distillery (pronounced "tomintaul") was built in 1964 as part of Hay & Macleod and W&S Strong in the village of the same name, which, at 345 meters above sea level, is one of the highest villages in Scotland. This distillery lies in uneven terrain, which is surrounded by winding hills and dotted with clumps of woody vegetation. It draws water from the Ballantruan Spring.

It is said that the transparency of the spring and the purity of the air at this altitude contribute to the softness and lightness of the single malt whiskey from this distillery; and indeed, Tomintoul sells his Scotland as an "easy sip." This distillery is relatively large, producing up to 3.3 million liters a year. Tomintoul is used up a maximum of seven days a week and boasts a decent storage capacity - a total of 75,000 barrels can be stored in its four warehouses. In 1974, Tomintoul officially launched its first 12-year-old whiskey bottle.

Every year for two weeks, Tomintoul uses malt with a significant proportion of peat - 55ppm - in a series of his peat whiskeys. The Tomintoul distillery was acquired by Whyte and Mackay in 2000 and is currently owned by Angus Dundee. Tomintoul seems to have matured with a wave of recent products, including 1976, bottled in 2008.
