Thomas Henry: the story of the inventor of bubbles and iconic tonics for mixed drinks

Since 2010, the German company Thomas Henry has been producing non-alcoholic beverages that are perfect for mixing drinks. They are constantly innovating their production methods and introducing completely new, unusual flavors. Why did they name their company Thomas Henry?

Who was Thomas Henry?

Pharmacist, scientist, and innovator

Thomas Henry (1734–1816) was a British pharmacist, member of the Royal Society, and passionate explorer. In addition to pharmacy, he also studied drinking water and its preservation.

The invention of carbonated water

He was the first to discover that adding sodium carbonate keeps water fresh for longer, prevents it from spoiling, and gives it a refreshing taste. This discovery was particularly significant for the British navy, which was able to take drinking water instead of alcohol on long voyages.

However, it remains unclear to us why manufacturers Thomas Henry Tonic Water used a portrait of Thomas's son William Henry for their brand, rather than Thomas Henry himself.

Thanks to Thomas Henry, a new era of bar culture began, which continues to this day. Here's to you, Thomas!

The birth of soft drinks

The first carbonated drinks in Manchester

In 1773, Thomas Henry began producing and selling carbonated soft drinks in his pharmacy in Manchester. He thus became one of the first soda manufacturers in the world.

Thomas Henry vs. Schweppes

Johann Jacob Schweppe was also one of the pioneers of carbonated drinks, patenting his method in 1783. Today, both names are inextricably linked to the history of tonic water and bar culture.

It was there that bartender Fernand Petiot was the first to mix vodka with tomato juice around 1921. The drink was simple but refreshing—and quickly…
